On Tuesday, September 23, 2025, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held a training event titled “Industrial Design and Integrated Circuit Layout Design Training: Protecting the Aesthetic and Technological Aspects of Innovation.” The event, held at the Sugeng Martopo Building, PSLH UGM, aimed to increase researchers’ awareness and understanding of the importance of intellectual property (IP) protection, especially in the fields of Industrial Design (ID) and Integrated Circuit Layout Design (ICLD).
This event was the second training, following a previous patent drafting training, as a form of commitment by UGM’s Intellectual Property Management Office (IPMO) to equip the academic community with comprehensive IP knowledge. Prof. Ir. Sang Kompiang Wirawan, S.T., M.Eng., Ph.D., in his remarks and report, emphasized the importance of protecting ID and ICLD for university innovation. He highlighted three main obligations for lecturers: meeting grant requirements, protecting students’ work, and providing economic and social benefits to the community.
UGM has two pathways for utilizing IP: commercialization and community service, supported by STP (Science Techno Park) for innovation downstreaming, IPMO as the IP protection institution, and IA (Innovation Academy) as a startup incubator. The training successfully attracted 50 participants who attended offline and 60 participants online, mostly from the Engineering, MIPA (Mathematics and Natural Sciences), and Vocational clusters.

The training event, guided by Apri Tri Nugroho, ST., M.Eng, featured speakers from the Directorate General of Intellectual Property, Indonesian Ministry of Law. The material in the first session was delivered by Ms. Ruslinda Dwi Wahyuni, S.S., M.Si., LL.M., an ID Examiner at DJKI (Directorate General of Intellectual Property), with the topic “Industrial Design in the Digital Era.” In her presentation, she sought to help participants map their creations so they could be classified as ID and disseminate awareness about this protection.

The second session was presented by Mr. Faisal Narpati, S.T., M.T., a Patent and ICLD Examiner at DJKI. He explained the legal basis for ICLD (Law No. 32 of 2000), related Government Regulations, and the procedures for ICLD protection.
The Q&A and discussion session during the training covered several important points, including technical advice on the ID application process, especially for developments of existing products, the 10-year protection for ID which cannot be extended but can be modified for new protection, the need to consider the legal system of the destination country for commercializing ID abroad because protection is territorial, the possibility of registering IC through a patent for technological function and ICLD for the layout, and the importance of using open-source icons or elements that are free to use by displaying them in dashed or blurred lines in the application. Following this session, the training continued with a discussion and direct mentoring on drafting ID and ICLD, which was divided into two teams.
This training provided a deep understanding of the importance of protecting ID and ICLD for innovation in higher education. With increased IP awareness and knowledge, UGM researchers are expected to be more proactive in protecting their work, driving innovation, and providing real contributions to society.
