Yogyakarta, June 10, 2025 – Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) once again demonstrated its commitment to fostering the development and downstreaming of innovation, particularly in the herbal and cosmetics sectors, through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PT Martina Berto Tbk and PT Global Edukasi Talenta Inkubator (GETI)/Exporthub.id Ecosystem. The event, held at UGM’s Innovation and Creativity Hall (GIK), was attended by stakeholders from industry, academia, and researchers.
In her welcoming remarks, UGM Rector, Prof. dr. Ova Emilia, M.Med.Ed., Sp.OG(K)., Ph.D., emphasized the importance of collaboration between universities and industry to ensure that research findings do not merely remain in laboratories but can be genuinely utilized by society. “UGM remains committed to promoting research and innovation development, especially in the herbal and cosmetics fields. Through various internal and external funding and facilitation, we strive for our innovative products to be beneficial and competitive nationally and internationally,” she explained.
“This is a shift that has occurred in the last 3 years, where universities must indeed have a strong network with industry,” stated Prof. dr. Ova Emilia. She added, “This collaboration is not only to create innovation but also to ensure that the research produced can provide real benefits to society, and can be widely implemented to solve various existing problems.”
This MoU covers cooperation in education, research, and community service for a period of five years. This collaboration is expected to identify superior innovations in the herbal and beauty fields, while also increasing the visibility and exposure of UGM’s research products. The event was also attended by several key industry figures, including Dr. Kilala Tilaar (CEO of Martha Tilaar Group), Bryan David Emil (President Director of PT Martina Berto Tbk), Amalia Susilowati, S.Str., M.M., CMT. (President Director of PT Global Edukasi Talenta Inkubator/Exporthub.id Ecosystem), and Siswadhi Pranoto (Founder of ExportHub.id).
The CEO of Martha Tilaar Group, Dr. Kilala Tilaar, expressed her appreciation for UGM’s initiative in promoting the development of natural ingredient-based cosmetic products. “An initiative that is hoped to become a platform for students to develop entrepreneurial spirit and contribute significantly to the progress of the UGM campus,” she stated.
Meanwhile, Amalia Susilowati, President Director of PT Global Edukasi Talenta Inkubator (GeTI Incubator), dubbed “The Export Woman,” expressed optimism that this collaboration will open wider opportunities for UGM’s innovative products to enter the global market. “Through this collaboration, it is hoped that innovations produced by lecturers/inventors at the University in the herbal and beauty fields can be identified and their visibility and exposure can be increased,” she affirmed.
On this occasion, Universitas Gadjah Mada will explore potential downstreaming collaborations for 28 innovative products in the herbal and cosmetics sectors, developed by interdisciplinary researchers from the Faculty of Biology, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing, Faculty of Animal Science, Faculty of Engineering, and Faculty of Agricultural Technology. The oversight of the downstreaming of these innovative products is carried out by UGM Science Techno Park (STP) and Intellectual Property Management Office (IPMO).
This synergy across scientific disciplines supports UGM’s efforts to build a holistic, integrative, and applicative innovation ecosystem—as a tangible contribution of the university in addressing challenges and community and industry needs sustainably.
As part of the event series, a proposal for the Campus-Entrepreneurship Roadshow program was also submitted to the UGM Rector, a program that serves as a platform for students to develop entrepreneurial spirit and make real contributions to campus advancement. The series of events concluded with a visit to the Mini Expo and short-Pitching session in the Mini Expo area. Visitors had the opportunity to see and hear direct explanations about the products in the Mini Expo, which are innovations in the herbal and cosmetics fields, developed by UGM’s interdisciplinary researchers.
With the signing of this collaboration, UGM and its industry partners have opened up opportunities and strengthened the innovation ecosystem in Indonesia, with the potential to provide real benefits to society.
