Yogyakarta, May 20th 2025 – Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) continues to demonstrate its strong commitment to encouraging its lecturers and researchers to create and produce scientific works and innovative products that benefit society and industry. To protect research outcomes with significant impact, UGM officially launched the Intellectual Property Management Office (IPMO) yesterday as the university’s dedicated unit for managing Intellectual Property (IP). The launching ceremony took place at Innovation and Creativity Arena (GIK) UGM.
The establishment of IPMO marked a significant highlight of the Future Deeptech Forum (FDF) 2025. The official kick-off of IPMO took place after the lunch break and was followed by Session 3 of FDF 2025, titled “Protecting and Catalyzing Innovation.” The session featured key speakers including the Director of Patents, Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DGIP), and the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, alongside a presentation of selected innovations, moderated by the Director of IPMO.
IPMO is established to provide a range of services, including filing UGM owned Intellectual Property (IP) applications to the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DGIP), Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia. IPMO will also offer assistance in IP registration procedures, analysis of the IP potential of academic research outputs, as well as workshops, awareness programs, and technical guidance related to IP.
Dr. Danang Sri Hadmoko, UGM Vice-Rector for Research, Business Development, and Partnership, expressed optimism that the presence of IPMO would inspire young innovators to produce high-quality research and innovations. “We are ready to facilitate innovations that will be registered through IPMO, and there will be support from the relevant departments,” he stated.

Prof. Ir. Sang Kompiang Wirawan, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., Director of IPMO UGM, explained that the office carries a vision to become a center for intellectual property management and protection that upholds integrity, innovation, and global competitiveness. This vision will be realized through the establishment of an adaptive IP information and policy center, development of strategic partnerships, and facilitation of IP for the entire UGM academic community.
Prof. Sang Kompiang further emphasized that IPMO is responsible for monitoring and enforcing IP rights, as well as providing assistance throughout the IP registration process, managing and developing the university’s IP database, and fostering collaborations with industry and government sectors.
The establishment of IPMO signifies UGM’s strategic move to strengthen its innovation ecosystem, ensure the protection of research outcomes, and maximize the real-world impact of academic innovations for society and industry.
