Yogyakarta, July 14, 2025 – The Intellectual Property Management Office (IPMO) UGM fulfilled a request for assistance in Intellectual Property (IP) applications with several strategic partners, including BRIN, IPB, ITERA, and Perhutani. The coordination meeting, held on July 14, 2025, at the Postgraduate Meeting Room of the UGM Faculty of Forestry, aimed to formulate an IP registration strategy as part of achieving the outputs of the Superior Sengon Research Collaboration Center (PKR). Prof. Ir. Sang Kompiang Wirawan, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., as the head of IPMO UGM, presented on the procedures and processes for IP registration applicable both at the University and at the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) of the Ministry of Law. In her remarks, Prof. Dr. Ulfah Juniarti Siregar, as the Head of PKR Superior Sengon, emphasized the importance of inter-institutional collaboration to strengthen legal protection for research results. One of the main points discussed was the possibility of collaborative IP registration with a co-ownership scheme. This requires further discussion among BRIN, UGM, IPB, ITERA, and Perhutani to ensure fair distribution of rights, including the quantification of each party’s contribution in terms of funding, expert personnel, and laboratory facilities.
IPMO UGM, through its internal system, is ready to facilitate IP registration. However, a selection process needs to be conducted first to determine which IPs will be registered by UGM and which would be better registered by UGM’s partners. It is important to include the names of the team members involved in drafting the IP to be registered. Additionally, participants agreed on the importance of preparing comprehensive patent drafting by synthesizing information related to sengon research. The meeting also featured presentations on the output achievements from each institution. Prof. Dr. Liliana Baskorowati from BRIN highlighted the need for data and resource integration to accelerate innovation in the forestry sector. Meanwhile, representatives from IPB, ITERA, and Perhutani also shared the latest developments in their research.
The Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, and Cooperation of the UGM Faculty of Forestry, Prof. Ir. Widiyatno, M.Sc., Ph.D., appreciated the spirit of collaboration shown by all parties. He expressed hope that this synergy would continue to be strengthened to promote innovation and wider utilization of research results. The meeting concluded with the formulation of a strategy for achieving the outputs of PKR Superior Sengon and a joint commitment to strengthen future research cooperation. With a solid collaboration, the results of superior sengon research are expected not only to contribute significantly to the academic world but also to support the development of the national forestry industry.
